Our company has taken an innovative approach to help combat the opioid epidemic. Toolkits containing two inhalable doses of naloxone – the overdose-reversing drug better known by the brand name Narcan – as well as medical gloves, a surgical mask and instructions in the use of the inhaler were the result of rapid prototyping sessions held at our innovation center. These $130 toolkits have been distributed, free of charge, to Massachusetts companies in industries where the rate of opioid overdoses is the highest. In conjunction, Blue Cross will provide employee education, toolkit training sessions, and access to an online opioid resource center.
Challenge
Make a difference in the opioid epidemic.
Problem
In 2018, there were 1,995 confirmed deaths resulting from opioid overdoses. If treated with Narcan in a timely manner, 93% of those deaths could have been avoided.
Solution
In nine short months we built an opioid overdose toolkit including (2) doses of Narcan, a mask, a pair of gloves and simple instructions to arm bystanders with the tools they need to effectively treat an overdose before it is too late.
Results
In 2018, there were 1,995 confirmed deaths resulting from opioid overdoses. If treated with Narcan in a timely manner, 93% of those deaths could have been avoided.
